The novel, on which Orhan Pamuk worked for six years, tells the story of boza seller Mevlut and his lover, to whom he wrote love letters for three years, about their lives in Istanbul. For more than forty years, between 1969 and 2012, Mevlut worked in many jobs on the streets of Istanbul, such as selling yoghurt, making rice dishes, and guarding a parking lot. On the one hand, he watches the streets being filled with all kinds of people, most of the city being demolished and rebuilt, and people coming from Anatolia becoming rich; On the other hand, it witnesses the transformations, political conflicts and coups that the country goes through. He always wonders what makes him different from others, the source of the strangeness in his mind. But he never stops selling boza on winter evenings and thinking about who his lover really is. In love, is a person's intention or fate more important? Does our happiness or unhappiness depend on our choices, or do they develop outside of us and happen to us? While A Strangeness in My Mind searches for answers to these questions, it depicts the conflict between family life and city life, and the anger and helplessness of women at home.
