Description

Black Pearl Book Description Anna Sewell (1820-1878): She was born in Great Yarmouth, Norfolk, England. His family moved to London when he was two years old and raised him in accordance with the Quaker tradition, which adopted the principle of thinking of others and showing kindness and respect to everyone. At the age of fourteen, he contracted a muscle disease and became partially bedridden. He depended on the horse that pulled his small two-wheeled carriage to travel for the rest of his life. He wrote his only book, Black Pearl, which he conceived as the autobiography of a horse, in his last five years, after learning that his disease was fatal. The book was inspired by his anger at animal cruelty, especially the use of fixed vice straps on draft horses. He wrote that his aim was "to encourage people to show compassion and love to horses and to be understanding." The Black Pearl, which attracted great attention when it was published a few months before Sewell's death, is one of the most widely read classics of all time.
