Description

Three Styles of Politics Book Description: In the history of Turkish thought in the 19th century. Various social, political and economic changes have occurred in the Ottoman Empire since the second half of the century. Faced with this threat of weakening, disintegration and collapse of the state and its dependence on the West, Turkish intellectuals began to think and look for a way out of this chaos. As a result of these searches of the intellectuals, many different ideas were put forward, and while trying to prevent the collapse of the state, at the same time making the state strong again and bringing it to a dominant position became the main source of concern for the intellectuals. During this period, the search for various solutions for the future of the state was generally shaped around ideas such as Ottomanism, Islamism, Turkism, Westernism and Decentralization. In this context, one of the works that best reflected the discussions of that period, and perhaps the most important one, was Yusuf Akçura's Three Styles of Politics, that is, the combination of Ottomanism, Islamism and Turkism. With this article, Akçura both identified the negative course of the Ottoman Empire compared to his contemporaries and examined the three movements together by offering various solutions in his own way. With this article, which went down in the history of Turkish ideas as Three Styles of Politics, Akçura primarily discussed these movements in their historical developments, and then discussed whether they were useful and applicable for the Ottoman Empire.
